12/11: New Menus, Free Hot Cocoa, Lights Galore

Updated: Dec 14, 2017

New seasonal items at DBGB: recent menu updates include Executive Chef Nicholas Tang's take on some Chef Daniel Boulud classics such as the Foie Gras Terrine with Bartlett Pear, Hazelnut and Brioche; Octopus A La Plancha with romesco sauce, piquillo pepper, red onion, and marcona almonds; and Heirloom Carrots with sumac yogurt dressing, fennel, golden raisin and coriander.

New openings:

  • Primrose Wine Bar: From husband-wife team Sebastian Zutant and Lauren Winter, comes the Brookland wine bar serving family-style French bistro classics such as beef bourguignon, steak frites, coq au vin, cheese plates and more. Wine offerings include 75 varieties by the bottle as well as 15 selections by the glass.

  • Isabella Eatery: The much anticipated food hall from Mike Isabella has officially arrived. Located at Tysons Galleria, the 41,000 square foot food emporium will include nine concepts comprising of new and existing Mike Isabella brands. Diners can enjoy everything from fast-casual to full-service dining experiences with concepts including Graffiato (Italian-style shared plates), Nonfiction Coffee (coffee shop with speciality espresso beverages and bakery items), and Retro Creamery (a nostalgic ice cream shop serving up sundaes, banana splits and other ice cream novelties).

IMO there's only one way to combat the cold weather: hot cocktails. Check out my list of warm sippers at Drink DC, featuring Commissary, The Bird, Hazel, Sixth Engine and Bourbon Steak among others.

In other news, the giving season now includes things like free (and almost free) hot cocoa. Here's where to fill up on decadent hot chocolate without breaking the bank:

  • Le DeSales: Complimentary hot chocolate upon arrival for dinner service.

  • Hamilton Hotel: Weekdays through December 22 from 4-6PM, sip on two complimentary hot cocoas: a traditional Creamy Hot Chocolate or opt for the Caribbean hot Chocolate.

  • Masa 14: Free hot chocolate bar through December 21 in honor of the bar's rooftop reopening.

  • Pennsylvania 6: Every weekday from 2-4PM enjoy sweet or spicy hot cocoa for $1 with complimentary cookies.

It's time to get lit... in the most literal sense. Go out for a nighttime stroll and take in all of the light displays before the holiday season comes to a close:

  • Christmas Trees: check out the conifers on display in front of the White House, Capitol Building, Library of Congress and CityCenter for your perfect holiday photo opp.

  • National Menorah: swing by the White House Ellipse for the duration of Chanukah and view the lit, colossal menorah.

  • Georgetown Glow: The annual light art exhibit runs through January 7 and features installations located in DC's oldest neighborhood.

  • Zoo Lights: After hours Zoo access includes a seasonal light display and entry to select animal exhibits. Warm up with hot cocoa and adult beverages available for purchase.
