This Week: The Shutdown Special Edition

The shutdown continues and that means furloughed workers are sitting on the sidelines until further notice. Area restaurants, attractions, and bars are offering discounts, specials and deals to help while government employees go without pay - here’s our list of things to Eat, Drink and Do in DC for our furloughed friends.


A slew of Jose Andres’ restaurants are giving away free sandwiches to government employees and their families. Available from 2-5pm at the bar; must show government ID:

  • Jaleo (DC, Crystal City and Bethesda locations) - Flauta de Jamon Serrano: crispy bread brushed with tomato and extra virgin olive oil with jamon serrano.

  • Zaytinya - Chicken Schwarma: garlic-lemon marinated chicken, tomatoes, romaine lettuce on lavash bread with garlic sauce

  • Oyamel - Torta Suadero: braised beef brisket served with pickled tomatillo, Dijonnaise, lettuce and onion

  • America Eats Tavern - Pulled Pork Sandwich: pulled pork, olive oil brioche, coleslaw

  • Beefsteak - Beetsteak Burger: marinated beet, pickled red onion, leaf lettuce, tomato, sprouts, vegan chipotle mayo, olive oil, sea salt on olive oil brioche.

Local pizza chain Pizzeria Paradiso is offering all federal employees and contractors two appetizers and a large pizza for $30 at all locations throughout the day for the remainder of the shutdown; must show ID.

Georgian restaurant Supra will give away a happy hour menu item with the purchase of any wine, beer, cocktail or Georgian soft drink and happy hour times will be extended during the shutdown to 2-6PM. To redeem one free item, guests must show federal government ID.

Stop by Brookland’s Finest and receive happy hour pricing any time of the day for federal employees with valid government ID.

Downtown Italian eatery, Carmine’s, will give federal employees free meatball sliders from 2-4pm, all day happy hour at the bar, and a special “Hard Times” Cocktail priced at $6.

Chinatown watering hole Bar Deco is offering federal employees with a valid ID $8 signature Manhattans and 20% off their full check (excluding alcohol).

Old Town Alexandria’s Fish Market will also be giving federal employees with a valid ID 20% off their full check (excluding alcohol) and $8 signature Manhattans.

Barracks Row’s Valor Brewpub will offer $7 food specials every weekend (Friday - Sunday) from 4pm-close for furloughed employees with valid government ID. Snack on menu items including Korean Fried Chicken, Sloppy Style Carry-out Burger and DC Chicken with Mambo Sauce - bonus: all dishes come with fries.

At the Chinatown location only, government employees can receive one complimentary traditional taco from Taco Bamba with valid ID.

Navy Yard's Due South will be offering happy hour prices starting at 2pm.

LEON, the UK-based healthy fast food chain is supporting government employees by offering 50% off until the shutdown ends.


Pop by Olivia Macaron for one of their sweet treats and snag a free coffee with any purchase.

The Occidental’s newest cocktail highlights the need for a unified and healthy government (cue the kale). Sip on the themed drink, Bipartisan Disobedience featuring Glendalough Irish Gin, Volcan Blanco, Cilantro, Kale, Pineapple, and Owen’s Ginger Lime for $14.

Show your federal government ID at Junction Bakery & Bistro and receive a free 12 oz cup of drip coffee.

Pop into Cuban restaurant Little Havana with your government ID and score half off drinks every day throughout the shutdown.

Logan Circle restaurant Commissary is extending Bottomless Mondays through the rest of the week for the remainder of the shutdown for federal employees - receive endless bloody marys and mimosas for $15 with government ID. Excludes weekends.

Sip on $1 glasses of proprietary wines on tap at City Winery while the shutdown lasts - must show valid federal government ID.

Take advantage of extended happy hour at Pennsylvania 6 - from 3-9pm, enjoy $5 premium well liquor mixed drinks, rotating draft beer and house wine for the remainder of the shutdown.

The Penn Quarter location of City Tap House will offering happy hour prices daily from 4-10pm with $5 draft beers, $6 house wine and $7 beer and shot combos for those with federal government ID.
